Using a Voltmeter to Test the Car Battery Safely

Testing the power in your car battery with a simple voltmeter is easy if you know how. All you will need to get the job done safely is some heavy-duty work gloves, protective glasses, a wire brush, and your voltmeter.

The car engine and lights have to be off before working around the battery. Open the hood and check for any signs of corrosion on the battery terminals. If present, wipe away using the wire brush. The voltmeter is a simple testing device with a red cable and black cable. Red goes to positive on the car battery, the black always to negative. Once the voltmeter is on, the reading will show 12.4 or better when the car battery is holding a charge and working fine. If the reading is 12.2 or worse, it may be time for a new battery.

Bring your vehicle to our service center here at Lithia Hyundai of Anchorage if you're not comfortable testing the car battery on your own.
