Taking the Mystery Out of the Tire Symbols

We have all seen the mysterious letters and numbers on our tires, but we may not have given them much thought. However, when it is time to replace the tires, it is helpful to know what tires are best for our vehicle. The correct tire pressure is also present on the tires, which is handy when we check the pressure.

The first letter signifies the class of the tire. "P" stands for "Passenger", "LT" means "Light Truck" and so on. The following symbols are the width of the tire, the ratio of the tire height to the tire width, the construction type of the tire ("R" = "Radial"), the maximum load and the speed rating. Other groups of numbers are a DOT marking and the maximum load and tire pressure numbers.

When it is time to replace your tires, come in to our service center here at Lithia Hyundai of Anchorage in Anchorage, AK, and our technicians will examine the tires and discuss with you any needed replacements. We can also provide any other services you may require.
