When you're driving somewhere, and that "Check Engine" light comes on, you wonder if it's something serious or nothing at all. There obviously is a problem, but there is no need to panic. First, find a safe and convenient location and pull over. Check your gas cap. Make sure it is screwed on securely. Quite often the system will check for emission leaks, and a leaking gas cap will produce such a reaction.

If the light does not go off within a few miles, you will need to visit an authorized service technician. The technician will plug a small computer tablet into the bottom of your dashboard. This will let him know what the problem is. It's as simple as that, and will cost nothing if your automobile is still under warranty.

Usually, the cause is something simple and inexpensive to remedy or repair. If you ignore that light, then it might get expensive. So, when you see that light, ask your dealer to send you to his authorized service technician for peace of mind.
